Fishing News readers quickly put name to a face

The unknown fisherman, depicted in a high-quality portrait presented to Peterhead Port Authority, was quickly identified by Fishing News readers last week as being Danny Fisher of Newlyn, reports David Linkie.

Danny Fisher

Danny Fisher…

While originally from Fleetwood, Danny Fisher has lived in Newlyn for many years, although he retired from fishing a couple of years ago after a lifetime at sea.

As a crewman on the Newlyn beam trawler Billy Rowney PZ 532, Danny Fisher appeared in the TV Documentary Trawler Wars rather than Trawlermen as originally thought. During the popular series, Danny Fisher was referred to as ‘Old Danny’ because his son was also a crewman on Billy Rowney.

Who is this

…was filmed as a crewman on the Newlyn beamer Billy Rowney in Trawler Wars (second left).

Full of character, the portrait was painted by the spouse of a delegate from Holland who attended a maritime conference earlier this year at Aberdeen, when the painting was presented to PPA Board Member Robbie Middleton.

PPA Chief Executive Ian Laidlaw said: “Sincere thanks to readers of Fishing News for putting a name to a well-known face so quickly. Now that the mystery fishermen has been identified as coming from Newlyn, we will contact the local Mission Centre there, as it was always our idea to present the portrait to the Fishermen’s Mission.”

An appeal on the Fishing News Facebook group page quickly resulted in an identification being made. Thanks to our followers for getting in touch so fast, and helping to solve this mystery.
