A large crowd of friends gathered at Symbister harbour to welcome skipper Bobby Polson and the crew of the new 82m midwater trawler Serene LK 297 home to Whalsay, reports David Linkie.

Incorporating a number of new ideas, including an enclosed foredeck, Serene is the first pelagic vessel Karstensens Shipyard has designed and built for Shetland. Supplied by Karmøy Winch AS, all of Serene’s deck machinery is mounted on and above the full-length boat deck.

Serene left Lerwick on Tuesday night, to fish herring off Start Point, Orkney on Wednesday alongside the new Fraserburgh midwater trawler Ocean Star (see page 7 of this week’s Fishing News).

A detailed feature on Serene will be included in Fishing News soon.
