Former crew members of the RNLI Shoreham Lifeboat held a get-together at the Sussex Yacht Club on 24 June, reports John Periam.

The event was arranged by Mike Fox, whose family have had strong lifeboat links over many years. “It was nice to see so many there – we all seemed to have aged well,” he said, with a smile.

Chatting over a few beers, they reminisced about days gone by, when fishermen often made up a large percentage of RNLI crews around the UK coastline. Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat is a very busy station, and has taken part in many historic rescues.

The current crew, under coxswain Steve Smith and lifeboat operations manager Peter Huxtable MBE, are keen to see traditions remain.

Peter said: “It is nice also to still be able to see sons following fathers as crew members. The RNLI is all about ‘lifeboat families’, and we certainly have some we should be proud of at Shoreham.”

The afternoon went well for all involved, and it was a time for memories and reflections. These can be read about in the book on Shoreham Harbour Lifeboat which can be purchased online at: shorehamlifeboat.co.uk
