Ocean Endeavour sails on first trip after extensive vessel refurbishment

Ocean Endeavour PD 625 sailed from Peterhead last week, for the single-rig whitefish trawler’s first trip back at sea following large-scale modernisation work, reports David Linkie.

Since skipper John Buchan took the 30.5m Ocean Endeavour to Denmark, for what was originally expected to be a main engine overhaul, the trawler’s MAN Alpha propulsion unit and gearbox have been replaced.

In order to gain maximum benefit from the enforced longer lay-up, John Buchan decided to use the time to have a wide range of other work carried out, both at Frederikshaven, and when the
trawler returned to Peterhead.

This included Seagate Fabrication manufacturing and installing a completely new automated fish-handling system, including two Kronberg gutting machines. Another Peterhead company, Rapp Marine UK, supplied and installed two new split trawl winches, together with the latest generation PTS Pentagon autotrawl system.

PBP Services of Fraserburgh fully repainted Ocean Endeavour, which was fully shot-blasted internally, before new epoxy resin non-slip deck coatings were applied on the new working decks aft.

Further details of the extensively refurbished Ocean Endeavour, which is insured by Sunderland Marine and lands through Caley fisheries, will be included in Fishing News soon.

Atlantic Rose and Rose of Sharon slipped at Macduff for repainting by Davidsons of Peterhead.

Two Clogherhead prawn trawlers, Atlantic Rose S 70 and Rose of Sharon S 7, owned by Michael Kirwan and his son, also Michael Kirwan, are currently berthed alongside each other on Macduff’s slipway while being refitted by Davidsons Ship Painters of Peterhead, reports David Linkie.

When the French-built 24m trawlers followed each other to Macduff, they were immediately slipped before Davidsons started to implement a co-ordinated schedule of work on each vessel.

After the underwater hulls were water-blasted, a four-coat paint treatment, including a proxy primer, hi-build, sealer and anti-fouling was applied.

At the same time, Davidsons also completed repainted Atlantic Rose and Rose of Sharon, both externally and internally.

Atlantic N 258 for Fraserburgh

Aquarius started fishing prawns from Fraserburgh last week.

Skipper Bruce Mitchell sailed from Fraserburgh last week for his first trip with the 20.4m twin-rig prawn freezer trawler Aquarius FR 95, reports David Linkie.

Aquarius is the former Kilkeel-based Atlantic N 258, which Bruce Mitchell bought from her previous skipper Trevor Annett. The FR 95 registration now on Aquarius was previously on Jacqamaur, built by Forbes of Sandhaven for Bruce Mitchell’s father Alexander.

Built in France in 1983, the steel-hulled Kerose CC-555233 joined the UK fleet in 2007, when the Cummins-engined vessel was bought by Trevor Annett and Gordon Campbell to replace the 19.8m Bounteous N 942 (ex Jamander FR 171).
