Dover Coastguard sent the Dungeness lifeboat to aid a 10m French fishing vessel taking on water, 11 miles southeast of Dungeness.

Two people were on board the vessel.

Once on scene, duty coxswain Roger Gillett, in command of the Shannon class lifeboat 13-02 The Morrell, found the persons had abandoned the stricken vessel by transferring to a Boulogne fishing vessel that was standing by.

The lifeboat went along side to assess casualty care of the people, with all indicating they were dry and well.

The RNLI lifeboat returned to the stricken vessel to see if it could be saved.

However, it was clear the vessel was taking in water too fast and within three minutes the lifeboat had to speedily move away to prevent any damage to the lifeboat as the stricken vessel sank.

Dungeness lifeboat returned to station, refuelled and was ready for service by 6.30am
