The first hull modules of a new twin-rig trawler for young Skye skipper Andrew Montgomery, in partnership with his dad Alasdair and Asteria Fishing Company, are now being fabricated by Macduff Shipyards in its boatbuilding hall at Buckie, reports David Linkie.

Of LOA 19m, 16.45m registered length, beam 7.2m and a moulded depth of 4.1m, the new vessel will replace the 16-year-old, 18.2m twin-rig trawler Asteria BRD 250. Andrew and Alasdair Montgomery’s new boat will be powered by a Caterpillar C18 main engine coupled to a Reintjes 7.409:1 reduction gearbox. A Mitsubishi 6D24TC auxiliary engine will drive the trawler’s main hydraulic engine, while a smaller Mitsubishi S4KT electrical generator will also be fitted.

The new build is the first fishing vessel to be totally built at Buckie for more than 20 years. Three twin-rig trawlers, the 16.7m sisterships Antaries BF 27 and Pleiades BF 155, together with the 17.2m Holly B II FR 29, were fitted out by Buckie Shipyard Ltd for Fraserburgh owners in 2001, after the hulls were built under sub-contract in Russia.

Buckie Shipyard also fitted out two GRP catamaran potting boats, Fram IV and Samantha Jane. Since buying the modern boatbuilding facilities at Buckie a few years ago, Macduff Shipyards has built a number of fishfarm vessels, in addition to the 25.7m hopper dredger Selkie.
