A new event, Festival of the Sea, will be taking place in Grimsby on Saturday, 17 July to celebrate the town’s connections to the sea, with a day of free street theatre, music and dance.
Festival of the Sea, which has been produced by The Culture House in partnership with outdoor arts organisation Walk the Plank – invites residents and visitors on a ‘voyage of discovery, where they can enjoy live entertainment while sampling Grimsby’s seafood and take part in hands-on activities, as well as joining walks, talks and a debate’.
Free tickets are available now for two-hour main programme time slots for the event, for entry at either 11.30am, 1.30pm or 3.30pm, enabling limited audiences to enjoy the festival under current Covid restrictions, while maintaining social distancing.
The live programme for the event includes ‘Out of the Deep Blue’ by Autin Dance, featuring a sea giant ‘washed up on the shore’, and music from Manchester’s International Roots Orchestra as well as comical street theatre acts.
A range of activities around the town, away from the festival main site, are also bookable, including ‘Congregation’ by sound artist Ray Lee, which takes participants on a ‘sonic journey’ to a secret location, a two-hour walk led by Grimsby Tours exploring Grimsby’s connection to the water, and an Alfred Enderby Smokehouse tour.
“We need to navigate new connections with the sea, and cultural activities can offer a great way to imagine new futures as well as celebrate our rich heritage,” said Councillor Callum Procter, cabinet member for economic growth, housing and tourism.
The physical event will be complemented by an additional programme of digital activities in the lead-up to the festival, exploring Grimsby’s heritage and its sustainable future.
