A new event as part of the annual fish trades golf week, the David Linkie Challenge Cup, was played for the first time in North East Scotland on 19 May.

Sponsored by Peterhead Port Authority (PPA), the event, held at the Duff House Royal Golf Club in Banff, welcomed a wide range of competitors from across the fishing industry for an enjoyable and occasionally competitive day, whilst remembering the achievements and contribution of former Fishing News editor Dave Linkie, who passed away last June.

The eventual winner of the new trophy was Robert Stewart from Kilkeel.

Simon Brebner, chief executive of PPA, said: “We were delighted with both the weather and the turnout at the Duff House Royal Golf Club for the inaugural David Linkie Challenge Cup, which was keenly contested on a golf course that threw up some serious challenges, but with deserved spoils for the ones who managed to navigate them successfully – a bit like the fishing industry!

“We were also pleased that the David Linkie Challenge Cup, sponsored by ourselves, was welcomed into the illustrious trophy collection, some of which have been contested for almost 100 years!

“Remembering David’s memory through this annual event is a fitting tribute to him and all he achieved working with Fishing News, and it will mean a great deal to his wife Liz and family.

“We look forward to welcoming more players to next year’s event, and will ensure full details are available for potential new entrants in plenty of time to make suitable plans.”
