Since 2019 Scottish skippers have designed and used a web-based app, called BATmap (see ), to avoid bycatch. The UK Seafood Innovation Fund has funded a two-year project to reconfigure BATmap for the west of Scotland prawn fleet and roll-out the app in a self-selected group of boats affiliated with the Scottish Fishermen’s Organisation and the Clyde Fishermen’s Trust.

Working as part of an experienced team, including IT specialists, fisheries researchers and industry scientists, the post holder will:

  • Participate in discussions related to the design of the software;
  • Co-ordinate the roll-out across participating boats;
  • Facilitate collection of data that will be used to investigate the effectiveness of the app in reducing bycatch;
  • Communicate with users and interested industry partners using a range of media;
  • Prepare quarterly written reports as required by funder.

The successful candidate will have an academic background in a relevant degree programme and/or several years of experience working in the fishing industry. They will have expert knowledge and experience in several of the following: inshore or offshore fisheries; information and communication technology; real-time data analytics; sustainable fisheries.

Communication skills, oral and written, and excellent interpersonal skills are essential requirements. Strong time management is expected given the short time frame for delivering the project milestones. Some work outside normal working hours may be required.

The post can be based either at the University of Aberdeen or at the office of an industry partner depending on practicalities and by mutual agreement. Travel to relevant ports may be required.
