Newly appointed fisheries minister Daniel Zeichner undertook his first official appointment in Brixham last week, taking in a tour of the market and processing facilities and making it aboard both an under-10m netter and a beamer. He then took part in a round- table that involved Defra officials as well as a cross-section of representatives from the port and beyond.
“Food security is national security, and a sustainable fishing industry is a key part of that,” he said. “I’m keen to hear from the fishing and seafood industry about their ideas on how we can best work with them. That’s why I’ve been in Brixham in my first week in post, and will be speaking to fishers in ports across the UK in the months to come.”
Mike Cohen, CEO of the NFFO, said: “In discussions Daniel Zeichner confirmed his inclusion of fishing as vital to the UK’s
food security mix, and also that he understands that the industry needs stability in order to contribute to national economic growth.
“Overall, the discussions went down very well, and we look forward to seeing his commitments put into action.”
