Pittenweem Fishermen’s Memorial Association has published a fourth book in its popular series of ‘tales from the East Neuk’.

Even More Tales from the East Neuk is now on sale, once again priced at £12. The format is the same as the previous books, with many stories related to the local fishing industry – but the book also branches out and includes well-researched historical articles about the fishing villages of Fife.

Apparent throughout all the tales is the huge role that the sea has played in the identities of the East Neuk communities – even for those inhabitants who chose never to go to sea or, as the book relates, who tried fishing and disliked it. Alongside those who worked in the local industry, the book tells the stories of those who found roles in the merchant navy or Royal Navy, or even in the distant fisheries for whales in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Retired fishermen talk about their careers, and the huge changes they have witnessed in their lifetimes, which have seen many of the harbours along the Fife coast gradually emptying and losing the herring fleets, longliners and seiners that once were the backbone of these communities.
