Fisherman Moses Odonkor has died following an accident onboard the prawn trawler Boy Jason S 440, which was working on the Porcupine Bank, early on the morning of Tuesday, 4 February.

Originally from Ghana, Mr Odonkor, who was 53, is reported to have lived in Ireland for over 20 years, in recent years in Skibbereen. He had worked on the Boy Jason since 2017.

It is believed that he was critically injured while nets were being shot. His crewmates were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead before emergency services could be dispatched to the scene.

The Boy Jason returned to Castletownbere, arriving early on Wednesday morning.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Shortly after 6am on Tuesday, 4 February, 2025, Gardaí, received a report of a fatal workplace accident aboard a fishing vessel off the coast of Castletownbere, within Irish territorial waters.

“The Marine Casualty Investigation Unit, Marine Survey Office, Health and Safety Authority and the local coroner have all been notified.”

Spokesperson for Irish charity Lost at Sea Niall Duffy said: “On behalf of the fishing community, I want to extend our sympathies to the family and his fellow crewmates on the tragic loss of a respected and well-liked crewman.”
