Brixham to host high-profile king scallop conference

The South Western Fish Producers Organisation, in association with Devon & Seven IFCA, will host a seminar conference on king scallops at the Brixham Laboratory of the Plymouth University next week, on Monday 10 and Tuesday 11 October.
Dr Kevin Stokesbury from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) will lead the conference on king scallops, which will include presentations and discussion about the about the possibilities of aiding stock assessment by drop-down video sampling and analysis.

Kevin Stokesbury, whose work in developing the SMAST Scallop Video Survey was essential to transforming scallop surveys in the 1990s, will also talk about his extensive personal experience in the North-West Atlantic scallop fishery with USA and Canadian scallop fishermen, and development in the fishery.
Mike Sharp, Neil Watson (fishermen) and Tim Robbins (DSIFCA) will join Kevin to speak of their impressions gained during their visit to the USA scallop fishery in 2013.
Lauren Parkhouse will present about her work with the ‘Stokesbury Frame’ estimating king scallop populations of the inshore waters off South Devon.
CEFAS scientists will also discuss their work to-date on king scallop population estimation techniques, and the proposed project to undertake king scallop stock assessment in English waters over the next 2-3 years.
Emma Sheehan (Plymouth University) and Claire Szostek (Bangor University) are also invited to present their respective PhD work in the English Channel.
Representatives from some 20 organisations, universities and IFCAs, together with the MMO, DEFRA and CEFAS, have been invited to participate in the high profile two-day scallop conference.
