Independent Fresh Fish Retailer of the Year
This award recognises local UK or Irish fresh fish retailers who have shown continued support to the commercial fishing industry in their community, trading from a shop, market stall or travelling van in 2017. Nominees will demonstrate a focus on supporting locally-landed fish, with a good range of species on offer, encouraging consumers to experience some varieties that are more usually exported, and others which deserve to be more popular. Please note this category is not open to national supermarket chains.
Fish on the Quay, Exmouth
Fish on the Quay is described by customers as ‘a proper fishmonger.’ Its fish is locally-sourced, and the range is wide, including cuttlefish, gurnard, pollack, ling, monkfish, grey mullet, bass, bream, crab, mussels and more. Nothing is too much trouble for owner Simon and his team, whose knowledge is described as ‘encyclopaedic’. The service extends to advice on cooking, best-value purchases, and information on sustainability. Small wonder then that Fish on the Quay is seen as ‘a wonderful asset to Exmouth.’
Fresh from the Boat, Emsworth
Fresh from the Boat provides local people and local businesses with locally-caught fish and shellfish. Run by Peter and Chantelle Williams, each day’s catch comes from local boats, including Peter’s own boat, the Sarah C SE 121. The catch is displayed on the company website, and delivered to customers by Chantelle. A weekly whole fish fish-box service is particularly popular with customers, as is the work put in by Chantelle to educate people on preparation and how to best cook fish.
Hughes’ Fish Company, West Mersea
Hughes’ Fish Company is steadily converting the local community to the benefits of locally-caught fish. Run by husband-and-wife team Natasha and Kevin Hughes, much of their stock comes from Kevin’s fishing boat on Mersea Island, with free delivery to the local community and surrounding areas. Their seafood platter is particularly popular and praised by customers, who also value the advice that they receive from the Hughes on preparation and recipes.
Latimer’s Seafood Deli, Whitburn
Former shellfish fisherman Robert Latimer and his staff offer a combination of great fish, knowledge, and outstanding customer service. The majority of their fish and shellfish is sourced from local harbours on the North East coast, including Eyemouth, Boulmer, Blyth, North Shields, Sunderland and Whitby. Each day’s catch is publicised on the company website, with up-to-the-minute customer alerts on Twitter, and advice on which fish are in season. Latimer’s also smokes fish in-house, and makes soups and fish pasties.
World of Fish, Lowestoft
World of Fish is a family business run by Alan Snow and his son Bryan. They offer an extensive range of wet, shell and smoked fish, much of which is locally-sourced. Customers highlight the range of fish on offer, and praise the tremendous welcome and customer service that they receive. The team happily share advice on how to store and cook purchases, and are active in the local community, with charity work.
