The five man crew of the Fraserburgh twin rig trawler Kairos BF 190 were safely rescued from a life raft in the early hours of Tuesday morning overnight after the 18.6m sank 75 miles west of the Isles of Scilly, reports David Linke.
UK Coastguard received two distress calls just after 23:45 on Monday 18th May including an EPRIB signal from Kairos.
Falmouth Coastguard coordinated the search that involved two Irish Coast Guard Search and Rescue helicopters, RNLI St Mary’s lifeboat, fishing vessels and two commercial vessels that were in the area.
The five crew were recovered from the life raft to the Irish twin rig trawler Cu Na Mara S 224 before being taken to Castletownbere in Ireland. All crew members were reported to be safe and well.
Jim Morrison, Senior Maritime Operations Officer for the UK Coastguard said, “Thankfully all the crew were rescued. An incident such as this shows the value of having Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and an Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) onboard. Using the information from the distress alerts we were able to locate the fishing vessel’s last position quickly and deploy resources to the scene.”
Kairos was built by Macduff Shipyards in 2004 as Amethyst BF 19. The steel hulled vessel was renamed Vision II BF 190 in 2008, before becoming Vigilant and later Kairos last year.
