A programme of training courses has restarted to make fishermen more aware of the perils of man overboard incidents.

Falling overboard is the biggest single cause of workplace fatalities in the industry. To help combat this, the RNLI and Seafish, with funding secured for the Fishing Industry Safety Group, have been running man-overboard training events at environmental training pools across the UK.

These courses have now been restarted, and will continue through to 2022.

“Participants will be in the pool to experience a realistic man-overboard experience under controlled conditions,” Seafish explains of the courses, warning that ‘these are strenuous, physical events, which are not for the faint-hearted’. “You should be in good physical condition to take part.”

The current venues and dates for the training courses are as follows. New dates and venues will be added as they are confirmed.

  • Fleetwood Nautical Campus on 29 and 30 October
  • Survivex, Aberdeen on 22 and 23 November
  • East Coast College, Lowestoft on 8, 9 and 10 December
  • South Shields Marine School on 25, 26 and 27 January, 2022
  • National Maritime College of Ireland, Cork, in January/ February, 2022 (date to be confirmed)
  • Fleetwood Nautical Campus on 11 and 12 March, 2022
  • Survivex, Aberdeen on 11 and 12 May, 2022.

These courses are fully funded. Spaces are limited, so early sign-up is recommended.
