On 29 December, the crew of Angle RNLI in South Wales were paged just before 6pm to assist a 23m trawler 32 miles southwest of St Ann’s Head.

A fisherman onboard had suffered a traumatic hand injury. A Coastguard helicopter had attempted to retrieve him, but had to abort due to the conditions.

With a 4m swell and 30-knot winds, the Angle lifeboat made its way steadily to the trawler. By 7.30pm the lifeboat was on scene, but the conditions were too rough to transfer the casualty, so the decision was made to escort the trawler slowly back to Milford Haven.

Once the vessels were within shelter, the injured fisherman was transferred to the lifeboat, taken to the Port Authority jetty, and transported to hospital.

The lifeboat was rehoused just before 11pm – ‘and the crew gratefully stepped onto ground that wasn’t moving’, they say.
