The next of a series of talks organised by Fishing into the Future (FITF) will discuss net zero and what it means for the industry.

The discussion, hosted by FITF trustee, retired fisherman and seafood advocate Adrian Bartlett, will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, 11 July at 4pm.

Hans Unkles will be speaking about his experience of converting an under-10m vessel to solar power.

For the session, FITF Talks is teaming up with Kara Brydson, executive director of Fisheries Innovation and Sustainability, to hear about implications of net zero for the industry, lessons on reducing greenhouse gas emissions on fishing vessels, political commitments and technological advances, and how fishermen are innovating and pioneering technology.

The event will feature an expert line-up of speakers, including Duncan Boag of Macduff Ship Design on concept designs for net-zero vessels, Hans Unkles and Douglas Chirnside on their first-hand experiences of converting under-10m vessels, and Mike Cohen, chief executive of the NFFO, on the work of the Vessels of the Future Forum.

Dr Magnus Johnson of the University of Hull will be speaking on research into the transition to net zero, while Daera’s Fiona Taylor and Ronnie McBride will explore lessons from an exchange trip to Norway.

The discussion will also feature David Fenner and Benjamin Craig of the MCA, who will be on hand to advise on developments, seeking approval on alternative fuel usage and how to link up with people with the right contacts.
