Virtually every part of the fishing industry’s supply and service sectors will be represented at the event.

Sharon Boyle, of show organiser Mara Media, said: “The demand for stands has been phenomenal, and we have pulled out all the stops to accommodate the requirements of exhibitors, including making extra space available.”

In order to provide more time and flexibility for the visitors to tour the stands, the opening hours on the first day have been extended by an hour, now running from 10am to 6pm.

On Friday 4 March, one of the highlights of the expo will be the free buffet and dance night, featuring superb Irish seafood, complimentary wine and music. Hosting this in the main restaurant will allow more space and seating, to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable evening. There will be a bar service available in the restaurant, with music in the main bar until late. Doors open at 6.30pm.

Sharon Boyle added: “These nights have become an integral part of our shows and could not succeed without our kind sponsors.”

BISON TRAWL DOORS RETURN TO GALWAY

Bison new rigging 007

Bison trawl doors’ updated rigging makes for easier handling.

Bison trawl doors are back after an absence of several years, having been one of the original exhibitors at the Galway Show.

John Ashworth, the designer of the Bison door, explained the company had experienced a challenging time recently when he was forced to retire due to ill-health. However, he has now returned on a short-term advisory basis, and everything is now back on a firm footing, with Yusuf Mohamed as director and the company renamed Bison Engineering.

With the introduction of different rigging, nearly five years ago, the handling of the doors is now much easier. John says his role is to advise Yusuf on door designs, and their applications in different fisheries, so that Bison can continue its proud tradition of supplying and servicing its popular trawl doors.

DRAWM FISHTUBS IMPROVE CATCH QUALITY

Quickly attaining optimum storage temperatures prolongs catch shelf-life and quality.

DRAWM Fishtubs will be exhibiting once again this year. The catch quality from small boats has improved greatly over recent years, thanks largely to the use of insulated tubs to chill and hold their catch.

Temperature control is by far the most significant factor controlling the deterioration of fish. Typically, whitefish can remain acceptable for about 10-11 days after capture when well iced, but this can reduce to one or two days if left unprotected, especially during the summer.

Insulated tubs
Insulated tubs are the greatest recent advance allowing inshore vessels to carry ice to sea.
Benefits of insulated tubs
• Using insulated tubs means ice can remain usable at sea for many days.
• Very versatile – can be used for many species, with fishermen seeing higher prices as a result of improved quality.
• Insulated tubs are eligible for European Maritime and Fisheries Funding (EMFF).

‘Slush Ice’
This technology involves a slurry mixture of ice and brine (sea water) which, when used correctly, cools fish much more efficiently than ordinary ice. The technique involves combining normal ice and seawater by hand in an insulated bin.

Benefits of slush ice
• Fish will reach the optimum storage temperature of 1-2°C when placed in slush ice for less than 30 minutes.
• Shelf-life of the fish can be extended by 3-4 days by icing at the earliest opportunity.
• Fish of high quality can attract higher prices at market.

DRAWM Fishtubs are available in a range of sizes including, 70l; 100l (including a hinged lid model); 220l; 310l; 660l and 1000l. Smaller coolboxes are also available, for keeping bait.

Visit the DRAWM stand to find out more about the options for funding through the EMFF, and to discover the best ratios for slush ice.

NEW SELVA MARINE XS OUTBOARD MOTOR RANGE
GETS FIRST IRISH SHOWING

The new XS range from Selva will be on display for the first time in Ireland.

This year’s expo will see the first ever exhibitor attendance by Selva Marine in Ireland, providing visitors with an exciting opportunity to see the unique XS range of Outboard Motors.

The XS range offers commercial fishermen the chance to purchase large displacement, low hp outboard motors which are ideal for under-10m craft. These motors are lower revving, under less strain and very efficient on fuel, so are ideal for high hours of operation in demanding fishing environments.

Selva is the only European outboard manufacturer and the only brand to offer such a range. At Galway, the Selva Tarpon 40 Outboard Motor will be on display.

Mark Pullinger, agent for Selva Marine in Ireland and the UK said: “The Selva XS range provides commercial users with an outboard motor that has a larger displacement for a given power, offering higher torque and lower fuel consumption, together with longevity and reliability.”

SERVING THE OIL NEEDS OF THE IRISH FLEET
Dublin-based LMP Oils, Batteries and Filters is a first-time exhibitor at Galway, with great experience and knowledge in the supply of the highest quality lubricants, marine engine batteries and filters.

A family-run business, the company supplies top quality OEM-approved Duglas oil blended in Italy, and Tecnol lubricants to the commercial sector, including fishing. David McGlynn of LMP Oils, Batteries and Filters says the company has built its reputation on the quality of its products, combined with excellent customer service and attention to detail.

“We strive for excellence in our selling and distribution channels, and offer a next-day delivery service nationwide,” said David. “Our experience makes us well placed to supply and service the Irish fishing industry with their oil, battery and filter requirements.

“We are looking forward to meeting visitors at Skipper Expo Int Galway 2016.”

IFM CONTINUES TO INCREASE MARKET SHARE

Audicious

Audacious B40, built for Clogerhead-based David and Niall Kirwan.

IFM, a distributor of hydraulic couplings, hose and lubricants, continues to increase its market share in the marine industry.

IFM was involved in the fitting out of the new B40 Audacious trawler. The first stage of the build was in Riga, Latvia, with the fitting completed in Killybegs by Mooney Boats and EK Marine.

IFM is Ireland’s leading distributor of Gates© hose and couplings. It also distributes adaptors, quick-release couplings and other ancillary products, susch Baldwin© filters and world-renowned lubricant brands including Fuchs©, ORLEN Oil© and Rockman.

This is the fifth trawler that IFM has been associated with, as it continues to make waves in the industry with its worldwide leading brands.

GROWING DEMAND FOR BOPP SERVICES IN IRELAND
Already a major player in the manufacture and installation of fishing vessel machinery, such as winches, throughout the Irish fleet, French firm BOPP has recently been involved in a major project to fit out a new fishing vessel for Charlie McBride (MFV Arcane) in Kilkeel, Co Down.

After many successful years with the current Arcane, skipper/owner Charlie McBride, together with his son Charles, decided to refurbish a vessel purchased last year, to eventually replace the existing Arcane, and install an extensive package of new deck equipment.

A new storage seine reel with a hydraulic motor was needed, and the expertise of the BOPP company was recommended by local engineer Russell Shepcar of DR Diesel in Kilkeel.

After meetings between Charlie McBride and BOPP Manager Remi Boennec, it became clear that BOPP’s systems could provide a wide range of benefits, and the project went ahead.

With the new custom-designed package, which includes a 5,500m-capacity of 34mm seine rope, with reels able to free-wheel to match vessel shooting speed, now manufactured and delivered to Kilkeel, work is ongoing with installation and the new Arcane will be ready for action by the spring.

Growth
Remi Boennec says Arcane is just one example of how BOPP is diversifying to meet the growing demands of the Irish fishing industry.

“Although we’re involved providing winches for tuna vessels and winches for trawlers in the U-15m, 15-40m and over-40m sectors, and netters, purse-seiners and long-liners, we’re eager to improve systems for fly-shooters,” he said.

Due to the growing demand for its services, BOPP has recently appointed four reputable Irish and UK agencies including Christy Hannon Engineering in Dunmore East; Gordon Ryan Engineering in Galway; DR Diesel in Kilkeel; and James Cowie in Peterhead.
