Catches totalling 110,000t with a value of £109m were landed at Peterhead in the first eight months of this year, reports David Linkie.

The level of landings from January until the end of July increased 28% by value and 14% in tonnage, from £85.9m and 96,680t, to total £109.2m from 110,112t.

40,387t of whitefish with a record value of £66.9m were landed at Peterhead in eight months, compared to 39,674t for £58.9m for the comparable period in 2015.

Increased shellfish and mackerel activity also contributed to Peterhead’s figures. By rising from £3.3m to £6.4m, shellfish catches nearly doubled in value and 72% by weight. At £35.9m from 52,773t, pelagic landings were 49% higher by value and 21% in tonnage.

With landings of 19,783t for £18.8m, August was the second-highest month of the year to-date, in terms of catch value, narrowly behind February’s total of £19.1m from 19,975t.

In terms of whitefish catch value, August was the biggest month to date at £9.7m from 5,417t.
